Ales Bialiacki elected vice president of international human rights watchdog
Ales Bialiacki, the leader of the Belarus-based human rights group Viasna (Spring), has been elected a vice president of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH). Based in Paris, FIDH is one of the most influential human rights organizations in the world. Because of having an observer status in the UN, the organization has a chance to intervene at the sessions of the United Nationals and other international bodies. Last year, Ales Bialiacki was among the nominees for the Nobel Prize for Peace.
In 2006, he was awarded with the Sakharov Prize in Norway, while in the Czech Republic he received the Homo homini Prize. Bialiacki's election took place in Lisabon at the world congress of the federation which unites human rights groups from around 140 countries, reports the web site of Viasna (Вясна).
