Artist Ales Marachkin and his picture “Our dolls” are arrested in Minsk

Transparencies that were supposed to decorate the column of demonstrators were detained by the police on the eve of the Day of Will. The artist Ales Marachkin who had made them was sentenced to 5 days of detention “for using bad language”. His picture “Our dolls” depicting the Belarusian authorities of the mid 1990s in a satirical way was confiscated. That is what the artist’s son Ihar Marachkin said to ERB:

"There were usual mottos about the Belarusian language, independence and freedom in the studio. The transparencies had been made for the decoration of the column during the today’s manifestation. There were about 10 or 20 of them, I cannot tell you the exact number. They took them away and delivered Marachkin to the police office... ".

In connection with the fact that the artist was arrested “for using bad language”, the confiscated transparences were not mentioned in the protocol. Policemen also took away one of Marachkin’s pictures – “Our dolls”. That is what Ihar Marachkin says:

"They noticed the picture among other works for some reason. They probably thought it had also been prepared for the action. However, it was drawn long ago. It is 1995, the beginning of the rule of Lukashenka. The Belarusian government of that time was depicted in a satirical way there…”.

Let us note that some of the people depicted in that picture transferred to the opposition during the 13 years.

Ales Marachkіn is serving his sentence in Arestsina Street. Ihar Marachkin has managed to send warm cloths, juice, a notebook and a pencil to his father. The guards did not let food and a blanket through.
