European lawmakers gather signatures for cheaper visas for Belarusians
50 members of the European Parliament have endorsed a statement, seeking cheap EU visas for Belarus nationals. However, at least 393 signatures are required in order to formally open a debate on this issue at the Council of Europe and later at the government level. The initiative is spearheaded by Social Democrats: Justas Paleckis (Lithuania), Genawefa Grabowska (Poland) and Hanes Svoboda (Austria).
MEP Paleckis told Radio Svaboda that there was still time until May. The campaigners want the European Commission to open negotiations with Belarus over the lower visa costs for Belarus citizens.
Opponents to this campaign believe that Minsk should first make certain steps in order to meet the demands of the European Union.
