Recent downpours damaged the roof of St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Homel. On Friday, builders began repair works by removing the roof surface. Workers finished working at 8 p.m. and would continue works over the weekend. The evening service took place despite the repairs.

The St. Peter and Paul Cathedral is 200 years old. Last year's anniversary celebrations were attended by Metropolitan of Minsk and Slutsk Filaret.

The church is seen as one of the most significant and beautiful in the country. It was funded by Duke Nikolai Rumyantsev who ordered the construction to English architect John Clark.

The church was built in 1801-1819 and resembles St Peter Cathedral in London.
