New Chernobyl sarcophagus to be built regardless of economic crisis

The financial crisis will not influence further financing of Chernobyl programmes in Ukraine. It will not influence the plans and terms of the construction of a new safe sarcophagus either. The Ukrainian Minister of Emergency Control Vladimir Shandra has claimed it. According to the official, the Chernobyl fund “Depository” already has the necessary money. Donating states have assured that they are ready to allocate more money if it is needed due to the project’s price rise (in particular, inflation) or any other unforeseen difficulties.

The construction of a new Chernobyl sarcophagus will start in 2009 and end by 2011, reports “Interfax”.
