New cross to victims of Communism to be erected in Haradok

Police in the town of Haradok, Vitsebsk region have opened a criminal case into the theft of the cross that was erected in honor of the local residents which were killed during the 1918 anti-Communist uprising.
Police investigators are questioning witnesses. But, Leanid Autukhou, an activist with the For Freedom! movement told the European Radio for Belarus that an investigator warned him off-record that the case would soon be suspended.

The cross went missing on October 30. In order to have the police open an investigation into this matter, Mr Autukhou had to declare the cross his private property. In respond, the local law-enforcement agencies threatened to penalize him for the unauthorized installment of the cross.

Under the law, police are obliged to continue the search for five years. Leanid Autukhou says that local activists are not going to wait. Next srping, they will install a new cross after having received a permission from the local authorities this time.
