Trial against Andrej Zhukavets to be resumed in Bialystok today
Both Belarusian and Polish sides have claims against him.
Andrej Zhukavets left Belarus in March 1999 under political reasons. A criminal case was started against him for failure to pay a big credit. According to the opposition activist, the reason for that was his political activity.
Persecution of the Belarusian citizen continued in Poland. Police took interest in him after a correspondent enquiry from the Belarusian side. He was imprisoned for 3 months and released only after personal interference of Lech Kaczynski. Zhukavets did not obtain the status of a political refugee, therefore, he may be extradited to Belarus.
Zhukavets' case has lasted for more than 10 years by now. It has been transferred from one instantion to another in Bialystok many times.
