Skidzel authorities celebrate town’s 500th anniversary 10 years earlier
Skidzel authorities have celebrated the 500th anniversary of the town 10 years earlier than they should have. According to a student of the local lore Yanka Lyalevich, the town was first mentioned in the Lithuanian birth certificate in 1498. There is an earlier note dating back to 1496 but it is indirect. An architectural historian Ihar Trusau also thinks that Skidzel was first mentioned 510 years ago. Nobody knows where Skidzel authorities got the date they celebrated.
By the way, it is the second time a thing like this has happened in Hrodna Region. One more city was made younger than it was. The 880th anniversary of Hrodna was celebrated this year although the majority of historians think that the authorities were a year late.
