Special reporter on Belarus to appear in European Parliament

A special reporter on Belarus has been appointed in the European Parliament. It is Bastian Belder from the Netherlands representing the group “Independence and Democracy”, reports “Ezhednevnik”. There used to be only one position of a special reporter on Belarus – in the United Nations Organization. There were certain parliamentary groups dealing with “the Belarusian issue” in the European Parliament.

It is informed that the mandate of a special reporter of the European Parliament will be different from that in the UN. It will be a consultant helping work out a more efficient EU policy concerning Belarus.

It is known that Bastian Belder used to a journalist and is very serious when it comes to violation of democratic liberties by the Belarusian authorities.

The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affaires claimed many times that there was no need in special reporters on Belarus in the UN system. However, it has not managed to comment on the decision of the European Parliament yet.
