Polish investigators have identified the migrant suspected of fatally stabbing soldier Mateusz Sitek through the border fence on the Polish-Belarusian border in May 2024. The suspect is now believed to be hiding in Belarus, according to RMF FM, citing unofficial sources familiar with the investigation.

Investigators reportedly questioned more than 140 people in Poland and abroad during the inquiry. The identity of the suspected attacker was established last year. He is said to be a citizen of a North African country.

In July 2025, prosecutors filed charges against the suspect and placed him on a wanted list, including through a European Arrest Warrant. Investigators believe he remains in Belarus. However, Belarusian authorities ignored a Polish request for his extradition, leading prosecutors to suspend the investigation in May 2026.

Twenty-one-year-old Mateusz Sitek was wounded on May 28, 2024, while serving on the border with Belarus. He died from his injuries on June 6.

At the time, a group of around 50 migrants attempted to cross the border, throwing branches, sticks and stones at border guards. One of them stabbed Sitek through the border fence with a knife attached to a pole.
