A hearing of Leanid Svetsik’s criminal case is taking place in Vitsebsk today, on June 10. The human rights activist is accused of arousing racial, national and religious animosity.
According to a human rights center “Vyasna”, the hearing of the criminal case started at 10 a.m. with a sudden incident. An unknown young man unfolded a poster saying “KGB is fascists” and explained that is was his protest against the criminal case. Then he left the court room.
On the whole, there are about 30 witnesses engaged in the case. Almost all of them are journalists of independent mass media of Vitsebsk and the region.
As some of the victims, namely Barys Hamaida and Yan Taupyha, have presented information about themselves in Belarusian, the judge suggested inviting an interpreter. Despite the fact that the participants of the process have refused the offer of translation into Belarusian, the judge (Ms. Urbanovich) has announced a break.
