UN admits that Belarusian authorities violated civil activist’s rights
The UN Human Rights Committee has admitted that the Belarusian authorities violated a Homel civil activist Uladzimir Katsora’s right for information distribution — they took away his 14 thousand leaflets “Five steps to a better life” and fined him for 30 base amounts in 2004. According to the UN Human Rights Committee’s recommendation, the Belarusian government has to provide the victim of the violation with an effective means of legal defense including a full reimbursement of costs and a necessary compensation. It also has to avoid similar violations in the future.
Uladzimir Katsora doubts the Belarusian authorities will take the UN recommendation into account.
Uladzimir Katsora complained to the UN Committee after he had appealed his fine and confiscation of leaflets in all degrees of jurisdiction including the Belarusian Supreme Court. He had to wait for his case to be considered by the committee for a long time, informs Radio Liberty.
