US Department of State demands to release political prisoners in nearest days

The USA remind Lukashenka once again that time is not on his side. Philip H. Gordon, Assistant Secretary for Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, has stated in the interview to BBC, that the Belarusian regime will not avoid sanctions if all the detained in connection with the events of December 19 are not released in the nearest days, informs the  "Voice of America".

"We closely cooperate with the European Union, which has even more means of influence, like prohibition to enter the EU to Lukashenka and other Belarusian officials. They work in the framework of the Eastern Partnership program, which is in Belarus' interests, and they also work on suspension of financial actives", - said Philip Gordon. "In case the country does not change its behaviour very soon, it is to expect corresponding consequences", stated the US Deputy Secretary of State. "Belarus will find itself isolated from the one side, and strongly dependent on Russia on the other side. As far as we understand, the country is not interested in that anyway", - warned Gordon. "However, the door is open. Improvement of relations is possible. He knows what to do for this and we are expecting him to take these steps as soon as possible", - said Gordon.
