For the first time, Belarusian culture was represented at the Karneval der Kulturen Berlin festival in Berlin. The Belarusian carnival group “Belarus Dances with the Dragon” took part in the event.

The festival took place on May 24, 2026. The Berlin event is one of Europe’s largest street festivals, bringing together nearly a hundred cultural communities from across Germany. More than 100,000 spectators attend the festival at the same time, while total attendance throughout the carnival reaches up to one million people.

The “Belarus Dances with the Dragon” performance featured artists, musicians and independent cultural activists.

The central symbol of the Belarusian колонна was a giant carnival figure of the Tsmok — a water dragon from Belarusian mythology. The Belarusian procession was also accompanied by a DJ playing contemporary music. Participants wore original carnival masks made from natural materials and wreaths woven from live plants.

Organizers noted that the carnival coincided with the celebration of Semik — a traditional folk holiday during which people honor the dead, decorate homes with birch branches and weave wreaths from them.
