Catherine Ashton to speak on Belarus in European Parliament today
High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union Catherine Ashton will make a speech on the situation in Belarus
at an EP plenary session today.
An official representative of the organization has informed the ITAR-TASS that “the head of the European foreign policy department will comment on the necessity of imposing sanctions on the republican authorities after the dispersal of the opposition actions on December 19, 2010”.
The voting for the resolution that will lead to strict measures directed against the Belarusian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenka and other officials will take place on Thursday, January 20. In particular, visa restrictions and the freezing of the mentioned people’s bank accounts in the EU member states is meant here.
