Venezuelan experts say milk powder from Belarus is okay
The first shipment of 100 tons of milk powder from Belarus arrived in Venezuela on February 17. The opposition press in this Latin American nation ran stories, "warning" Venezuelans that the milk was contaminated with radiation and thus harmful to public health.
The sanitary authorities of Venezuela on Tuesday refuted these reports. Lilia Korisales, the head of nuclear technologies at the Venezuelan Instiute for Scientific Research, said in a statement that all the imported foodstuffs were scanned and certified in accordance wihth the international standards, reports AMI-TASS.
Because Belarus was heavily affected by the Chernobyl nuclear fallout 22 years ago, the agricultural produce from Belarus is subjected to controls at the department of nuclear technologies, Korisales said. The experise proved that the Belarus-made milk powder contained no hazardous and radioactive substances.
