13:30 European Union prolongs sanctions against Belarus for one more year
The European Union will prolong the term of sanctions against representatives of the Belarusian regime for one more year.
The sanctions include interdiction to enter the EU and freezing of bank assets.
“The sanctions that were to end on April 11 will be prolonged for one more year” – informed Brussels ERB sources. The decision has to be approved by EU ministers of Foreign Affaires.
It is expected to happen on Monday, March 5. The sanctions imposed a year ago were a response to the presidential election of March 19. The EU did not consider the election to be free and democratic.
The EU “black-list” included 37 people suspected of falsification of the election and prosecution of civil activists. It includes Aliaksandar Lukashenka and his companions, ministers, special police officers, public prosecutors, judges and heads of local election committees.
Four people were added to the “black-list” in October – two judges and two public prosecutors involved in prosecution of one of the opposition leaders - Aliaksandar Kazulin who is now in prison.
