About 700 Minskers ready to give bail for political prisoners
However, it is not planned to send the bail-pieces to investigators now. Inhabitants of 40 other Belarusian cities are going to join the action soon. About 700 Minskers are ready to give bail for the people detained on December 19. People will take on the responsibility and guarantee that the politicians will not flee and will not violate the law if they are released on recognizance.
“We have not counted yet but I think we have collected about 700 bail-pieces. But it is only in Minsk. We have just started collecting them all over the country and will start distributing the necessary information – about the cities that have joined and people’s contacts. About 40 cities have joined and the number keeps increasing”, - said the head of the BPF Party’s Council Syarzhuk Semyanyuk to Euroradio. He noted that people often gave bail for all the four former presidential candidates at once – Sannikau, Nyaklyayeu, Statkevich and Mihalevich.
Let us remind you that anyone can give bail according to article 121 of the Criminal Code of Practice. At least to people should give bail for one person. If the person released on bail violates the law, the bailsmen may be fined for 1600-5800 dollars.
The action aimed at collecting bail-pieces started in the BPF’s office two weeks ago. However, they have decided not to send the documents either to the General Prosecutor's Office or to KGB.
Syarzhuk Semyanyuk: “We have agreed to keep collecting the bail-pieces and to present them to lawyers who will work on them. We have not given any documents to lawyers: we are accumulating them. By the way, lawyers have also said: “Keep collecting”.
Ales Mihalevich’s wife Milana got to know about the Front’s initiative not long ago. The same support has been expressed by the parents of her older daughter Stefania’s classmates. They took a decision to send a collective appeal to the Office of the Public Prosecutor and to the police to change the measure of restraint for Ales Mihalevich at a parental on January 18. Some people even suggested giving personal bail for the former candidate.
Mіlana Mіhalevіch: “Parents have signed the appeal to change the measure of restraint. They said that there were not only parents from other classes too. Some parents expressed a desire to give bail for Ales”.
Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu’s lawyer Tamara Sidraneka says that such a great number of bails is unexampled. However, she cannot say whether it is going to help her client.
Tamara Sіdarenka: “I have never seen so many bailsmen in my career – these people are ready to take on the responsibility for another person’s actions. But I do not know whether it will affect the investigators. There is a thing you can refer to and deny everything: “Accused of a serious crime. Any change of the measure of restraint is inexpedient”. That’s it! Formally, everything is correct. However, the very fact will be unexampled if so many people give bail”.
The lawyer noted that the agreement of the detained was also necessary. They do not have to approve the collection of documents, but they should agree to send them to the investigator together with the lawyers’ appeal to change the measure of restraint. Sidarenka says that it is possible to collect bails, write an appeal and discuss it during a meeting with the detained. If he agrees, the documents will be presented to the investigator.
