Action to demand freedom for political prisoners to take place in Minsk today
An action organized to demand freedom for political prisoners will take place in October Square on the evening of March 12. The leader of the campaign “Jeans for freedom” Yauhen Afnahel and the leader of “Malady Front” Zmitser Dashkevich have urged to organize it.
Let us remind you that the action was dated for a visit of the EU commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner to our country. However, it became known that the visit would be put off till April yesterday.
Afnahel and Dashkevich remind that the absence of political prisoners and the freedom of speech and assembly were among the terms for political contacts between the EU and the official Minsk. However, repressions have not ended and have become more severe. New political prisoners have appeared. “The authorities severely disperse street actions, beat, detain and fine their participants”, - is said in the appeal.
Leaders of youth organizations have suggested gathering in October Square at 6 p.m. with portraits of political prisoners in order to demand that the Belarusian authorities “should stop political repressions, start the real liberalization and fulfil the terms of the European Union”. Afnahel and Dashkevich are urging all democratic organizations to join the action, informs “Charter-97”.
