Alyaksandr Zdzvіzhkou’s case is closed

The investigation of the case of a journalist Alyaksandr Zdzvіzhkou has been closed by Minsk City court. The judge Aniskevich explains the decision by the fact that they do not want the information about the process “to insult Muslims”.
Let us remind you that the criminal case against Zdzvizhkou and “Zhoda” was started in 2006. He was accused of publishing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that had been printed in the Danish press. The journalist was the deputy editor-in-chief of the independent edition and he allowed to print the issue.

Alyaksandr Zdzvіzhkou is accused of having violated art. 130 (part 1) of the Criminal Code “rousing religious animosity”.

The former editor-in-chief of “Zhoda” Alyaksei Karol explained ERB what could happen to the journalist:

“The article may lead to a fine or five years in a so-called “penal labour camp”. Or to 5 years of imprisonment”.

The investigation was started in February 2007 and the case was sent to court. However, Zdzvіzhkou went abroad and was detained only in November 2007 when he came to visit his father’s grave. He has been kept in the KGB confinement cell for three months.
