Arlou: Polatsk will be Europe's cultural capital
The city of Polatsk in northern Belarus will today host the launch of the action titled "Belarus' Cultural Capital". The most ancient city in Belarus has received the status of the country's historic, cultural and spiritual center, following the initiative from the Ministry of Culture. Polatsk-born Uladzimir Arlou, Belarus' most famous modern historian and writer, was not invited to attend the action but describes it as a very positive event. Talking to the European Radio for Belarus, he expressed confidence that his native city deserved this status and would become Europe's cultural capital one day.
“I was not invited. But, frankly speaking, I am not really upset. I don't like all this noise and official speeches. I deeply believe that time will come and Polatsk will become Europe's cultural capital. So, am very optimistic that Polatsk was chosen as Belarus' cultural capital this year. This is one of the steps towards our come-back to Europe, because this idea was borrowed from the European Union”.
In 2010, Polatsk will host various exhibitions, concerts, plays, cinema premiers and art events.
