BAJ: Presidential candidates rarely mentioned freedom of speech problem
The Belarusian presidential candidates did not mention the problem of the freedom of speech in their programmes often enough, claimed the chairperson of the civil association “Belarusian Association of Journalists” Zhanna Litvina at a briefing in Minsk on December 17, informs BelaPAN.
According to her, Ryhor Kastusyou promises to liquidate the state monopoly on TV and in the radio. The programmes of Yaraslau Ramanchuk and Vital Rymasheuski contain promises to liquidate censorship in mass media and Ales Mihalevich promises to liquidate ideology departments and to cooperate with commercial mass media.
According to Litvina, BAJ experts tried to ask the other five candidates why the problem of the freedom of speech was not mentioned in their programmes. The election teams referred to the candidates’ coverage limit, she informed.
