Belarusians consume more anti-crisis bananas and... pineapples?

Economists maintain that the "Giffen paradox" has been observed in this country, when we switch to consuming worse-quality and cheaper products. Russia reports an unusual demand for bananas. When the price for a certain product is rising, the demand begins dropping. But under the Giffen paradox, the consumption grows unexpectedly despite a higher price.

In the view of economist Siarhei Chaly, in the conditions of the crisis, consumers begin buying products of the worse quality. At the same time, the costs of these products are also rising.

The European Radio for Belarus has decided to check how this theory affects the Belarusian market and has approached fruit-importing companies.

Frutimpartahandal: Apparently, bananas enjoy the greatest demand. Polish apples are also sold very well.

Skyfruit company also confirms the paradox by saying the demand for bananas has increased by 1.5 times!.

But Atempa company says they have not observed any increase in the demand for bananas.

It is worth noting that the statistics at the Minsk City Hall suggest that Belarusians have rushed to buy pineapples and avocado!

The European Radio for Belarus has asked economist Siarhei Chaly to comment on this unexpected demand for exotic fruits.

Siarhei Chaly: The higher demand is explained by the expansion of the market, not its re-segmentation.
