British Minister names terms for Belarus’ membership in European Union
Belarus will be able to become a member of the European Union in the future if it corresponds to economic and political criteria. The British Minister of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, with responsibility for Europe David Leadington claimed it at a lecture in the International Affairs Institute of Vilnius University. DELFI portal reports that, according to him, it can happen only if Belarus wants to become a member of the European Union. Furthermore, our country should create a democratic political system that would allow political parties to act freely and an independent court system, it should respect the freedom of speech, assembly and other democratic liberties.
In Leadington’s opinion, membership in the EU should be available to every European country that would like to join and, the most important thing, that corresponds to EU criteria. The British Minister says that the desire to become an EU member state may be a good impulse for democratization of the state. It can be observed in Eastern and Central European states and in the experience of Spain and Greece.
