British research centre predicts default in Belarus

A British research centre Global Іnsight has lowered the sovereign rate of Belarus to a situation of a possible default.
The centre thinks that our country has little money and the government cannot pay its debts. According to Global Іnsight, the foreign debt of Belarus is not big (because not many credits are given out), but there are “huge debts needed to be paid to foreign companies”.

Such sums as a 92 million USD debt to Russian companies and a 193 million USD debt to companies outside the CIS are mentioned.

“Lukashenka has found himself between a rock and a hard place. If he starts buying Russian gas transported to Europe through Belarus he will eliminate the possibility of good relations with the European Union he has been aiming at as an alternative to good relations with Russia”, - noted an analyst of the British Research Centre Global Іnsight Natallya Leshchanka in her interview given to ERB.

She thinks that a so-called “image war” will start in connection with the new conflict between Belarus and Russia – each country will be trying to prove its case to the EU.
