Court demands Br95 million from “Narodnya Volya”

The suit of pro-rector of Homel State University Syarhei Hanenya against “Narodnaya Volya” will be considered in Lenin District Court of Minsk on June 9. The deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper Svyatlana Kalinkina has explained to ERB that the reason for the suit was the fact that they had reprinted the article “Candidates announce their wages” from the website of the campaign “Tell the Truth”. Kalinkina: “We reprinted that article. Furthermore, we obtained more specific information about it in “Homel Pravda” because this newspaper was the first to print the income statements. However, we have been sued because wages and incomes were messed up there. The suit has been brought because of this confusion”.

The pro-rector of Homel University is trying to claim Br95 million from “Narodnaya Volya”. In Kalinkina’s opinion, this is the authorities’ attempt to stop the publication of the newspaper with the help of economic instruments.

Kalinkina: “Courts demand maximum 1 thousand dollars as a moral compensation for a rape, death of a person or disability gained at work and dozens of thousands dollars for offending an official, it is clear that politics is involved in it. Thousands of dollars is an enormous sum for an independent newspaper that has no state subsidies. Such economic instruments can stop the publication of the newspaper”.

According to Kalnkina, the things happening to the newspaper are a sign of the approaching presidential elections. The authorities are trying to close “Narodnya Volya” on the eve of this event. Otherwise, it is not clear why pro-rector hasn’t sued those who were the first to distribute the erroneous information instead of their newspaper, says the journalist.
