Deputy contenders detained near the border for 7 hours
Belarusian customs officers detained Ales Zarembyuk’s car (he is a deputy contender for a seat in Masty District Council and Hrodna Region Council) at the Lithuanian-Belarusian check-point “Benyakoni”. The opposition member was on his way to Belarus from EHU. Two of his group-mates were in his car.
According to Zarembyuk, they were delayed for 7 hours. The head of the check-point Syarhei Karabach claimed that he did not have permission to let them pass. At first customs officers told the guys that an old Polish visa in Zarembyuk’s passport had been forged. Then they examined their car. KGB confiscated a notebook from Andrei Tsalkou and a camera from Zarembyuk to conduct an expertise.
The opposition member thinks that the incident at the border is pressure directed against him as a deputy contender. Zarembyuk has lodged a complaint about the customs officers’ actions.
