European Parliament adopts resolution on Belarus – not a word about “dictatorship”

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on human rights in Belarus yesterday. The resolution proves that deputies are still worried about persecution of representatives of the opposition, independent mass media, non-governmental organizations and peaceful demonstrators by the Belarusian authorities.

The resolution demands that the official Minsk should abolish death penalty, organize free election and release Alyaksandr Kazulin. The document says that the European Parliament approves of the recent release of political prisoners in Belarus.

During the discussion of the project of the resolution the deputies agreed to cross out the notion “the last dictatorship in Europe” from it. Thus, despite of the European Parliament’s critical attitude to the Belarusian authorities, readiness for a dialogue was expressed, reports Radio Liberty.
