Opposition youth leader Artur Finkevich on
Thursday morning was not allowed to cross the Belarusian border into Lithuania
where he planned to meet with a group of US congressmen. Alyaksandr Kazulin, a
former opposition presidential candidate, had his personal belongings
thoroughly searched by customs officers. Anatol Lyabedzka, leader of the United Civic
Party, told ERB that he was travelling together with Kazulin, Finkevich, and Vintsuk
Vyachorka, deputy chairman of the Belarusian Popular Front, to Vilnius. Border control
officers told Finkevich that he was temporarily banned from leaving the country
and put an appropriate stamp into his passport.
"I think the incident was linked to the
purpose of our trip. The authorities want to create psychological problems, if
not to frustrate the meeting," Lyabedzka said.
