The Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Siarhej Martynau conducted a non-official flash-visit to Helsinki on January 11, informed the press-center of Finland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reports BelaPAN. The visit was organized "upon the request of the Belarusian side within a very short term". Finland's Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb met with his Belarusian colleague. The negotiations were connected with the Belarusian Minister's voyage to Brussels, stated in the message.

The parties discussed the presidential election in Belarus and the events which happened afterwards. Stubb told Martynau about Finland's deep concern with regard to violence which happened after the election and strongly condemned use of physical force. Finland "is especially concerned by the arrests of the opposition leaders and the relations with other representatives of the civil society and press".

The Finnish Minister appealed to free Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu and Andrej Sannikau, and also declared his concern about the situation with Sannikau's family (after the arrest of Andrej Sannikau and his wife Iryna Khalip, their 3-year-old son Daniil was left without his parents' care, his grandmother is executing custodial care).
