A group of Makey's Council members discussed problem of detainees

A non-formal meeting of the group of members of the civil-consultative council on the premises of the President's Administration took place in Minsk on Tuesday. The Belarusian Helsinki Committee's Chairman Aleh Hulak has informed live on air on Euroradio that less than a half of the council members were present at the meeting, the Chairman of the council - the head of the President's Administration Uladzimir Makey - was also absent. First they discussed plans for the future. They also spoke about the problem of the detained at the action on December 19 in Minsk and the problem of relations with Europe.  "It was important to know the opinions of my colleagues in the Council and realise what was happening in the country and what can we expect with such an instrument - a consultative council", — says Hulak.

According to him, not only the people who can be described as members of the democratic side took part in the meeting. Thus, there were different opinions. While Hulak and others turned the attention to the repressions, other side used arguments about "force actions" of the opposition.

However, they managed to come to a common conclusion that there was a difficult situation wich needed to be solved by joined forces. "There was a common position that this issue should be considered more officially", — stated Aleh Hulak.

The participants of the non-formal meeting suggested conducting a Council session in January 2011.

Let us remind you, the civil-consultative council on the premises of the President's Administration was created in January 2009. It is headed by Uladzimir Makey, the head of the President's Administration. Several representatives of the civil society are also members of the council. The council decides nothing, it can just recommend something to the state authorities.
