Information minister says private press dominates media market

Belarus' information minister Aleh Pralyaskouski said during an on-line press conference at the web site of BELTA that non-state media prevail on the Belarusian media market.  He reminded that re-registration of media organizations ended on February 8. 1075 printed media including 362 state-owned and 713 private, passed the re-registration. Besides, 212 electronic media (154 state-run and 58 private) and 6 news agencies were also re-registered.

As of May 1, 1281 printed media are registered in Belarus; 233 electronic media and 8 news agencies (966 are private).

However, the minister did not mention the number of non-state media that cover social and political events. Media experts note that this sector is dominated by the state-owned media.
