International Students' Day marked on November 17!
November 17 is marked as the International Students' Day, or the day of students' solidarity. This date was established in 1941 in London, at the international conference of students who fought against fascism. The history of this holiday is connected with tragic events.
On October 28, 1939 students and teachers of Czechoslovakia, then occuied by the Nazi, held a demonstration in Prague to commemorate an anniversary of Czechoslovakia's independence. The occupants suppressed this demonstration, and a student Jan Opletal was shot. His funeral turned into a protest action.
On November, 17 more than 1200 students were arrested and sent to concentration camps. Nine students and activists of student movement were executed without trial. November 17 has been chosen as the International Students' Day because of these events.
