Jerzy Buzek: We expect all political prisoners to be released immediately
The European Union expects immediate release of all the political prisoners from belarus. The president of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek has said this at the meeting with the representatives of the democratic opposition in Brussels.
“We have waited for you since December 19. We know it well that we need to change our policy with regard to Belarus. The real winners of the last election are those who are present here now.
We address to them for an advice how the European Union should act in view of the current situation in Belarus. First, we expect all the political prisoners to be released, fully and unconditionally. There are no options if someone wants to have any relations with us.
Secondly, it is necessary to render medical help to everyone who needs it after the events which took place on December 19. we also expect all the European institutions to reconsider the grounds of our relations with the Republic of Belarus.
Many things changed after December 19, and our relations should change as well.
There was a similar experience in some countries of the European Union. In my home country, everything started with "Solidarity". The war-like situation only postponed the inevitable. I am convinced it will be the same in Belarus. I am confident that Belarusian people will win in the end. The time for freedom and democracy will come soon.
I would like to assure the Belarusian people in our strongest solidarity with them”.
Aliaksandr Kazulin, Stanislau Shushkevich, the representative of Andrej Sannikau's HQ Victar Ivashkevich, Vital Rymasheuski's representative Dzianis Sadouski, Siarhej Kaliakin and Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu's daughter Eva Nyaklyaeva participated in the meeting with the EU's representatives. According to Eva Nyaklyaeva, Brussels has taken a strict position with regard to the events in Belarus.
