Law “On mass media” to be discussed by Council of Republic on Saturday
The Council of the Republic will consider the law “On mass media” on Saturday. Let us remind you that it was adopted by the House of Representatives in the second reading. The Belarusian Association of Journalists distributed an appeal claiming that the haste of adoption of the law testified to its repressive and limiting orientation that could be proved by the contents of the legal act.
In particular, the law provides for registration of Internet editions and control over the Internet by the Ministry of Information and the Office of Public Prosecutor, demands reregistration of all mass media after the law comes into power, makes the work of independent journalists and foreign reporters more complicated and increased the pressure exercised on them.
BAJ reminded deputies of the House of Representatives about their responsibility for taking decisions and urged the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly to reject the law “On mass media” and to revision it.
