Is Mahileu Region Governor Barys Batura going to retire?

As ERB has noticed, all governors but for the governors of Mahileu and Vitsebsk Regions are on the list of candidates for positions in the Council of the Republic. Uladzimir Andreichanka from Vitsebsk is going to join the House of Representatives. We have tried to ask Mahileu Executive Committee representatives why Barys Batura is not on the list. Nothing is known about the governor’s plans in Barys Batura’s waiting room. We were told that he was probably supposed to be appointed member of the Council of the Republic by the President.

“In my opinion, I cannot claim that it will be so. I can only assume it. Some contenders can be appointed by the President”.

Let us remind you that members of the Council of the Republic are not elected by citizens, they are elected by deputies of local Councils. Their meetings will take place from September 21 till October 10. There are 64 members in the Upper Chamber and 8 of them can be appointed by the President. The President did not appoint a single governor during the last elections. All of them were elected by deputies.

Mahileu officials claim that they do not know why Barys Batura has not been nominated this year. According to the press secretary of the regional executive committee Mihail Kavalyou, Batura did not share his plans with anyone.

“It is difficult to comment on it. He has not shared his plans with us. He was in the previous Council of the Republic and I do not know whether he will join this one. Who knows, he may be going to retire”.

The European Radio for Belarus has noticed that the vice speaker of the House of Representatives Syarhei Zabalotsets is not on the list either. He has not been nominated either for the Lower or for the Upper Chamber.
