Missing oppositionists remembered in Minsk
An action to commemorate missing opposition members Viktar Hanchar and Anatol Krasouski will take place today at 1800 on October Square in Minsk. Charter'97 reports that people are expected to bring the portraits of the disappeared oppositionists. Pro-democracy MP candidates will join the action, too.
Viktar Hanchar, the former first vice speaker of the 13th parliament of Belarus and the chairman of the Central Elections Commission, went missing in the evening of September 16, 1999. His supporter and businessman Anatol Krasouski also disappeared without a trace. Gen Yury Zakharanka went missing in May 1999. TV cameraman Dmitry Zavadski disappeared in the summer of 2000. The fate of these people has remained unknown until now.
International human rights watchdogs numerously called on the government in Belarus to investigate these disappearances.
