Opposition politician detained by police in Minsk

Aliaksej Janukevic, the deputy chairman of the Party of the Belarusian Popular Front, was today in the morning detained by police at his house. He is one of the organizers of the April 26 Cherbobyl March-2007 opposition rally. Two other organizers -- Valiancina Palevikova of the United Civil Party and Yury Ziankovic of the Belarusian Popular Front -- today are scheduled to appear in court on charges of violating the public order during mass rallies. But the trial of Ziankovic has been postponed due to his illness.

Police officers will act as witnesses during the hearing. They claim that the demonstrators were moving from Jakub Kolas Square along Surganava Street and hampering the traffic, according to the human rights center Viasna.
