Poland considers legalizing 8,000 illegal migrants from Belarus

Poland might legalize foreign nationals that reside illegally on its territory in 2011, Maciej Duszczyk, a member of strategic advisors' team at the Polish government told the Ukrainian official news agency UNIAN. A clause on legalization can be included in a new law on foreigners which is expected to be passed next year, he said. However, the Polish authorities are yet to determine legalization mechanisms.

Between 50,000 to 300,000 illegal migrants currently reside in 38-million-strong Poland. According to migrants, up to 500,000 foreign nationals could be illegally staying in Poland, including 80 percent of Ukraine nationals, followed by Russians (nearly 13,000). Other major illegal migrant groups include Belarusians (8000) and Vietnamese (8000)).
