Police: Mentsyuk's wife could face 5 years in prison
The Minsk Regional Police Department said a criminal case against Volga Mentsyuk could be opened on charges of allowing a drunk person to drive her vehicle (Article 318 in the Penal Code of Belarus). Her whereabouts are yet to be located. She disappeared together with the husband shortly after the accident. Andrei Lis, the acting chief of the preliminary investigations department, noted that it was not yet a priority to subject Volga Mentsyuk to criminal prosecution. The priority is to investigate the circumstances of this case, he said.
In early March, traffic police officers used a "live shield" of civilian vehicles with people inside to stop overspeeding Roman Mentsyuk who was driving under influence of alcohol. The people in vehicle survived but some suffered injuries. A criminal case has been opened against Mentsyuk, wanted by the police for three weeks.
Four traffic police officers who organized the live shields are under investigation.
