Popular Front party says it helped stop growth of duties on imported cars

The Belarusian Popular Front party is in court battle with the Central Elections Commission. The party filed a lawsuit against the Electoral Commission with the Supreme Court after the party was denied registration of a group to gather signatures for a referendum against higher import duties on foreign-made cars, reports Belapan. The Popular Front came out with the idea of a referendum in December 2009. The question the party wanted to ask during the polls was as follows: "Do you support preserving the customs duties on foreign cars at the level of November 26, 2009?"

The Central Elections Commission did not register an initiative group, saying the question was not clear and that answers could be interpreted in a different way.

At the same time, Popula Front reckons its actions were a success. PF leader Aliaksei Yanukevich believes that the customs duties on imported cars will not be raised on July 1, 2010, and this is an achievement of the Belarusian Popular Front.
