Priest Leanid Akalovich is detained in Minsk; he will stand trial in Staryya Darohi

An Orthodox priest Leanid Akalovich has been detained in Minsk this morning. He has been delivered to Staryya Darohi police office (Minsk Region). Akalovіch managed to inform BelaPAN that he was accused of organization of “an unauthorized action” on April 19. A cross in memory of 25 innocent civilians killed by Soviet partisans in 1943 was installed in the village of Drazhna on that day. Policemen claim that Akalovich consecrated the cross. The priest is not going to plead guilty and is waiting for the trial.

Let us remind you that the installation of the cross was initiated by the “Memorial” section of the Belarusian voluntary organization for protection of monuments. The authorities decided to dismantle it several days later. A politician Vyachaslau Siuchyk and a journalist Victar Hursik (the author of the book “Blood and ashes of Drazhna”) have already served their sentences  - they spent 15 days behind bars for participation in the organization of the action.
