Pro-democracy NGO escapes liquidation after a deal with justice department

The Supolnasc Center, one of the oldest pro-democracy NGOs in Belarus, will not be shut down as requested by the Minsk City Hall's department of justice. The Supolnasc was in court for two days, but officials eventually changed their mind. Human rights activist Yury Chavusau explained to the European Radio for Belarus why this happened.

“The department of justice stated that they accepted our peaceful settlement proposals. We also agreed to correct those technical defects in our work, associated with the bad work of the post.

We have concluded a peaceful agreement”, he said.

Due to the poor postal service, Supolnasc failed to receive several lists from the Ministry of Justice, includings the written warnings.

It turned out that the street where the organization has a legal address was considered within the boundaries of the capital just recently, thus causing technical difficulties in post deliveries.

The organization got a warning because one of the Supolnasc's board members was not registered in Minsk. But he managed to prove that he had lived in the capital permanently.
