Rally and a vigil in Minsk to commemorate Stalin's victims
A traditional rally and a vigil is taking place on Sunday in Minsk to mark Dzyady, the pagan remembrance day. The city authorities have authorized the event on condition that the rally participants march on sidewalks not on the Independence Avenue. The action is organized by the Conservative Christian Party -- the Belarusian Popular Front.
People gathered at 11 a.m. near the Park Chalyuskintsau metro station and proceeded to the Kurapaty in the suburbs of Minsk. A vigil to commemorate the victims of the Stalin's repressions buried there is scheduled to begin at 1430.
The European Radio for Belarus reported earlier that in earlier October unidentified vandals damaged a cross in Kurapaty. However, activists restored it on October 24 and installed it back to the original location.
