Scholars from Czech Republic, Poland and Belarus discuss totalitarian past in Hrodna

A joint discussion between the Czech, Polish and Belarusian scholars focused on the common totalitarian past during a meeting in Hrodna. The event was organized by the local branch of the Alexander Milinkevich-led Movement for Freedom campaign.  The discussion was chaired by Patrik Pleskot from the Institute of National Memory (Poland) and Petr Roubla from the Institute of Modern History at the Academy of Sciences (Czech Republic).

The meeting touched on the history of opposition movements and countries of the Central and Eastern Europe in 1945-1989, state ideologies, the operation of Communist secret services in those countries, the tragedies of ordinary people and other.

“It is hard to say what Belarus should expect and what path it will take. At any rate, this is a long process. One should continue struggling, because this is how freedom is taken", History Dr. Patrik Pleskot noted.
