Security Council of Russia: water can become a strategical resource in the near future

Water can become a strategical resource in the nearest future, stated the Secretary of the Security Council of Russia Mikalaj Patrushau in his interview to the "Russian Newspaper".
He reminded that the lack of water had provoked numerous conflicts and crisis in 46 countries of the world with total population of 2,7 billion people, during the last 10 years. The most conflict regions in this respect are Near and Middle East, Central Asia and North Africa.

According to the forecast made by Russian scientists, in 25-35 years the scope of drinking water consumed by the mankind will equalize with its resources, but the global water crisis can happen earlier, as the main stocks of water are concentrated in just several countries. The number of the so-called "water migrants", who left their houses due to the lack of water, has become approximately 20 million people in the world for just one year.

Let us underline that the territory of Belarus contains more than 10 thousand lakes, 143 active water storage reservoires, about 1500 ponds, more than 20 thousands rivers and springs. The stocks of underground fresh water at the territory of our country are estimated as 16-18 cube kilometeres.
