Sweden to help Belarus build nuclear waste dumps
Belarus and Sweden will cooperate in the project to build storage facilities for the nuclear waste from this country's first nuclear power station, Aliaksandr Mikhalevich from the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus said in an interview with the First Channel. He said Sweden could not be involved in the construction of the station due to a Swedish parliament's ban for the development of nuclear energy.
According to the academician, Belarus and Sweden are expected in November to sign a final protocol which will set out a cooperation program for 2-3 years.
Mikhalevich also added that "the Swedish government has earmarked Euro500,000 for the first stage of the program. In the future, the amout can be increased up to several million euros to fund the projects associated with the nuclear energy, renewable energy sources and bio-fuels.
Bo Emthen, a high-ranking official at the Swedish Foreign Ministry, visited Belarus on October 18-19 to discuss trade and economic cooperation, the Belarusian official sources reported.
