Syarhey Kavalchyk offered to run Russian Theater
According to Barys Lutsenka, formerly the art director of the Russian Theater, the candidature of Kavalchuk is being considered very seriously. Lutsenka compares Kavalchuk’s possible arrival with the time when he took over the theater at the same age of 38.
Lutsenka: “Negotiations with director Syarhey Kavalchyk are under way. The mister seems to have already talked to him. I know him and his father, Mikhail Kavalchyk…If he arrives, he will have to stage his own repertoire… He needs to begin with something he wants himself, to pick a play and actors and to show some class, of course”.
Kavalchyk has declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations. He says the contract has not been signed yet, so there is nothing to talk about.
Kavalchyk: “No comment. You know, I can’t make any comments, before everything is clear. You are saying there are rumors. But I study at the President’s Management Academy and believe in the documents signed by myself only. No contract has been signed yet. So I cannot formally confirm anything to you”.
Lutsenka recalls that he, too had a lot of interviews before he was approved as the chief director of the Russian Theater.
“We also had negotiations. Even Masherov (the then Communist Party boss in Belarus) had an interview with me before my appointment. He asked me various questions before approving me for this position”.
Lutsenka talks little about Mikalai Pinigin, but says that it will difficult to meet his demands.
“We have proposed to Mikalai Pinigin, but he has set out unbearable conditions. He serves at the Grand Drama Theater in St Petersburg where he is paid $2000 per month. We even don’t have similar wage rates. In addition, he is asking for a three-bedroom apartment. The government can provide him with a state-owned apartment, but he wants a permanent private one”.
Lutsenka has revealed that Pinigin could possibly be offered to direct the Kupala Theater.
“They say Pinigin could be possibly appointed as the chief director of the Kupala Theater. He is somewhat closer to the troupe there and is currently staging a play with them”.
