Trial in absentia against Kurmanbek Bakiyev starts in Bishkek

Trial against Kyrgyz ex-President Kurmanbek Bakiyev and a number of high-ranked officials has started in Bishkek.  Opposition protesters stormed the Kyrgyzstan government building defended by the State Security Service of Kyrgyzstan and "Alpha" riot policemen of the State Service of National Security, on April 7, 2010. 90 people were killed and 1,5 thousand injured as a result of the storm and further upheavals. The power was seized by the temporary coalition government, consisting of the opposition parties' leaders. Kurmanbek Bakyiev left the country and found asylum in Belarus, BelaPAN reminds.

Apart from witnesses and relatives of 78 victims and more than 300 injured, about two dozens of public prosecutors, led by the General Public Prosecutor of Kyrgyzstan, are present at the trial. There are also the lawyers and civic representatives of 28 accused. 

28 people are accused of mass killings which occurred due to abuse of official position. They are the ex-President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, his brother Janybek, who used to head the State Security Service, and his elder son Marat. Apart from that, the ex-head of the State Service of National Security Murat Sutalinov, the former Prime Minister Daniar Usenov, the head of the President's Secretariat Oxana Malevanaya and other high-ranked officials have been subjected to criminal responsibility. State Security Service and "Alpha" officers are also under trial.
