US demands immediate release of Kim and other political prisoners in Belarus

Tom Casey, US State Department spokesman, has called for an immediate and unconditional released of Andrei Kim and other political prisoners in Belarus. Andrei Kim was on Tuesday sentenced by a Minsk court to one and a half years in prison for allegedly hitting a police officer and for preparing the actions which "violate the public order".

According to the US official, "the Belarusian authorities continue to use the harsh tactics of dispersing opposition's demonstrations and rigid sentences as in the case of Andrei Kim and other activists".

Jonathan Moore, US Charge d'Affaires in Minsk has described the sentence issued on April 22 to the youth activist Andrei Kim as "a political decision". He also said Kim was a political prisoner, reports Belapan.
